The carillon on the UW Student Union used to play tunes at 8 a.m., presumably to get faculty, staff, and students cheered up for the day ahead. One morning I was walking over to the A&S Building with Eric Sandeen (head of American Studies), en route to some particularly tedious meeting. When we got to the middle of Prexy’s, the carillon starting playing “Send in the Clowns”! Eric and I actually paused, look at one another, and burst out laughing. We were still laughing when the meeting started. (A lingering question–did the carillon player have advance notice I was going to a meeting that morning?)
