Yellow Submarine

Many years ago, I just went to work in the State Historical Department in Cheyenne and our old car was about to fail totally. I learned from a friend that, since the Chrysler car company was about to go under, I could get a really good deal on one of their new cars. Sure enough, as long as I didn’t require any long-term financing, I could get a LeBaron for a very good price. Cheyenne banks wouldn’t finance it, I found out, but the new Wyo Employees’ FCU (now Meridian Trust FCU) decided to take a chance on Peggy and me, new in town and first-time new car buyers. (We’ve been customers ever since).

Well, we decided to take the new car for a noon spin around Cheyenne and immediately ran into a problem. The State or the City street department was painting yellow lines down Warren Avenue. No problem at first–cones directed us away from the fresh paint. But, suddenly, right in the middle of our lane was an open half-full can of paint–just setting there. We had no choice but to try to miss it by driving over it! It didn’t work–the clearance was too low…

Yellow paint went everywhere–on the bottom of the car, along both sides of the brand-new white car–it was a mess! I phoned the department and told them I’d be late getting back after the noon hour. Well, we did manage to get some of it off and I returned to work, just a little late, irritated with our misfortune. Awaiting me, as I walked in, was in impromptu chorus of a half dozen co-workers, led by (now old friend) Tracey Stoll, singing loudly, “We All Live in a Yellow Submarine…”

The incident comes back, every time I hear the song!
